I don’t like Christmas too much nowadays but that’s a rather long story so let me tell you instead the story of my favourite Christmas ornament. As I am Spanish and I didn’t meet the love of my life until 12 years after I arrived in the UK, I always went back to Spain for Christmas so I never really put a tree up in my flat, nor did I buy any ornaments. What was the point if I was flying out to Spain around December 20-22nd every year and flying back when all the celebrations were over.
That all changed in 2008, when I celebrated Christmas English style for the first time, staying at home with my then fiancé! Mr Tapas already owned a lot of nice Christmas decorations, an artificial tree, a whole lot of shiny tinsel and bright lights… My Christmas collection paled in comparison, 6 or 7 small ornaments that used to hang from door handles in my flat and that in a former life had hung from gorgeously wrapped gifts. You see, in Spain at Christmas time shops excel in free gift wrapping for all and they really go out of their way to make your gift look special.
My first Christmas with my fiancé in our home combined with my first Christmas in England deserved the start of a joint Christmas collection and tradition. This was the first thing we bought: a cheeky-looking reindeer from Next. It wasn’t expensive but it has a huge sentimental value, I still remember the day we bought it in Cambridge.
I have just taken it out of hiding and placed it on the mantelpiece, I wonder what my cuddly toy obsessed soon-to-be 18 month old will make of it when she wakes up from her nap.
