How to Cook Chicken Wings in the Instant Pot Duo Crisp
Equipment
- Instant Pot Duo Crisp
Ingredients
- 500-600 g chicken wings raw (see notes if you want to cook more)
- BBQ Sauce or sauce of your choice, or you could use a dry rub (get creative)
Instructions
- Coat the chicken wings in the sauce, use as much sauce as you need for them all to be coated.
- Lay the chicken wings on the air fryer basket's tray (like I did) or straight into the basket itself if using more than I did. Air Fryer lid in place. Press Broil (which is set at 204ºC / 400ºF) and programme 16 minutes, press Start.
- When the cooker beeps and the display says Turn Food. Turn the chicken wings over. If you have more than I did and you used the basket without the tray, put your silicone mini mitts on, grab the basket by the handles, lift the basket and shake. When you lift the lid the cooker will pause and it will continue where it left off when you put the lid back on.
- Check the chicken wings are cooked through at the end of the cooking time. Just add a few minutes if they're not. Same if you want them crispier.
Notes
How many does this recipe serve?
This amount serves one or two (if you're willing to share).
As I only have done 6-7 chicken wings at a time, I have used the tray in the air fryer basket.
You could fit a few more that way but you don't want it to get too crowded nor the wings too close to the lid.
If you want to cook a fair few chicken wings, do them straight in the basket without the tray.
Just bear in mind that the distance and the quantity may mean you need to increase the cooking time but it's easy, just lift the lid to check.
What happens when you lift the air fryer lid to check?
The cooker pauses and then it continues where it left off.
That easy.
The Instant Pot Duo Crisp's Air Fryer Basket
We're going use the Air Fryer basket that comes with the Crisp for this recipe. But make sure you remember this: you do not have to use the air fryer basket inside the inner pot every time you air fry, nope.
You could, for example, air fry a whole chicken directly in the inner pot, or even pressure cook then air fry it without using the air fryer basket the Instant Pot Duo Crisp at all!
The inner pot must remain in place though.
The Duo Crisp's Air Fryer basket is sturdy, as you would expect from Instant Pot, and has a base that clips on that you need to use with it at all times.
The base comes off for easy cleaning.
The basket also has what the manual calls a Broil / Dehydrator tray which I use in this recipe as it helps me bring things closer to the air fryer lid for crisping up.
But my favourite feature of the basket?
It goes in the dishwasher!! That said, try to not overdo it with the dishwasher, read my guide to look after your air fryer's non-stick coating.

No preheating
You may know this already from my How to use an Air Fryer guide from a while ago but there is no need to preheat an air fryer.
When I received the Instant Pot Duo Crisp back in 2020 I believe, I had had a standalone Philips Air Fryer since 2017 and one of my favourite things about said Philips Air Fryer was the fact that I didn't need to preheat.
The Crisp gave me so much more space than my Philips Air Fryer, which was on the small side.
No need to preheat means you save time and money on your energy bills.
Don't forget: your Duo Crisp is basically a mini oven. Treat it as such.
Of course, the fact that it can pressure cook, slow cook, steam and sous vide make it just perfect.
Does it have to be BBQ sauce?
I used BBQ sauce but make sure you just use the sauce or marinade you want, have, fancy or crave....
Or a dry rub.
Or even just salt and pepper and a bit of lemon.
What will you choose?
Oh and if you do choose BBQ sauce and have some left over, make these ribs!
Step-by-Step Photos
Step 1. Coat the chicken wings in the sauce of your choice.
Step 2. Lay the chicken wings on the air fryer basket's tray (like I did) or straight into the basket itself if using more than I did. Air Fryer lid in place. Press Grill / Broil button (the name on the button depends on whether you're in the UK or in the US I believe) and programme 16 minutes, press Start.
Step 3. When the cooker beeps and the display says Turn Food, turn the chicken wings over. I use silicone tongs.
If you have more chicken wings than I did and you used the basket without the tray, put your silicone mini mitts on, grab the basket by the handles, lift it out of the inner pot and give it a quick shake.
When you lift the lid the cooker will pause and it will continue where it left off when you put the lid back on.
Step 4. Check the chicken wings are cooked through at the end of the cooking time. Just add a few minutes if they're not. Same if you want them crispier.
Let me know how they turn out!
Don't forget that I often update my recipes so come back here 😊

How to look after your air fryer's non-stick coating
Buying an Air Fryer? You'll want to look after the non-stick coating so that it lasts you a long time. Let me tell you how.
Kathy Swigart says
Do the wings have to be thawed?
Maria says
Hi Kathy, yes, it's best if they are. If they're not, you could pressure cook them from frozen first on the trivet or in a steamer basket for about 10 minutes with 500 ml of water in the inner pot then air fry (and reduce the air fry time as they will already be cooked). Hope that helps, Maria
